Turn research into
a script worth hearing.

Follow a map-projection video from its source packet to the finished script. See the argument, a passage we cut and the evidence behind each section.

Give the research a job.

“Map projections” is a subject you could research for weeks. “If every flat world map distorts something, how should we choose one?” gives the writer a film to make. The example below follows that question through the sources, outline and spoken script.

Our worked example: a curious viewer recognizes a world map but has never chosen a projection. They need to understand why a map suited to navigation can mislead an area comparison. The argument is that a map should be judged by its task and the property that task needs to preserve.

This guide follows an original teaching example, created for this page. It is not a client commission. You can download the complete research packet and script, then follow its handoff to an editor.

Collect evidence around claims.

Build the source packet around the statements the film must earn. For each claim, retain the original source, the passage or section that supports it, the date checked and the boundary of the claim. Keep observations, interpretations and proposed lines separate. That makes it possible to change a sentence without losing the evidence behind it.

These sources were checked on September 7, 2026. The packet assigns them IDs so each factual paragraph can point back to the right support. The opening choice and the language connecting the facts are original writing. A source can support the science without supplying the story.

Turn the outline into an argument.

A topic outline tells you what subjects appear. An argument tells you why one part follows another. Read your outline as a sequence of changes in the viewer’s understanding. If two sections can swap places without affecting anything, investigate whether the relationship between them is clear enough.

The revised outline uses the same small body of research. It introduces a choice, explains the constraint, makes one compromise useful, shows where that compromise causes a problem, and returns to the choice. The writer has done the work of deciding which fact the viewer needs next.

For a research-heavy YouTube script, this is also where you decide what deserves a scene, a demonstration, a comparison or an expert explanation. Do not automatically convert each source into its own section. A section earns its place by changing the answer.

Write the version someone can hear.

Spoken explanation needs its own structure. A viewer cannot glance back at the previous paragraph as easily as a reader can. Introduce the object before its qualification; give a comparison a clear purpose; read the transitions aloud. The BBC’s writing-for-broadcast lesson is a useful reminder to write for the medium and test the words by speaking them.

Here is the opening from the example. Notice that the technical term arrives after the viewer has a reason to care about it.

Then remove passages that delay the question. This paragraph was written as a deliberately weak alternative:

Cartography has a rich history, from early representations of the world to today's sophisticated digital mapping systems. Over the centuries, mapmakers have developed many projections, each with advantages and disadvantages. Understanding these projections is essential to appreciating the maps we use every day.

It promises importance without demonstrating it. Removing it gets the viewer to the actual constraint sooner. This is an editorial decision about this film, not a rule that historical context is always unnecessary.

A01 — Put the viewer inside a choice

Imagine choosing a world map for a classroom. You want students to compare how much land different countries occupy. A sailor planning a route along a constant compass bearing needs a map for a different reason. The same projection will not serve both tasks equally well.

A02 — Explain the constraint

The Earth is curved, and the map is flat. When a projection turns one into the other, some properties change. You can preserve relative area, or preserve angles locally, but a flat map of the whole world cannot preserve every property at once. The choice depends on what the map needs to show.

A03 — Make the apparent flaw useful

On a standard Mercator map, a straight line can represent a constant compass bearing. That makes it useful for navigation, although the line is not generally the shortest route. Mercator also preserves angles locally. But as you look towards the poles, the areas become increasingly exaggerated. A map with a useful navigation property can give a misleading impression of how large a country is.

A04 — Return to the first job

For the classroom comparison, choose a projection that preserves relative area. The countries may have unfamiliar shapes, because shape is one of the properties that changes. But their relative sizes will be suitable for the comparison you asked the students to make.

A05 — Keep the explanation honest

You also need to specify the region. A projection suited to one small area can keep the relevant distortions small there, even if it would be a poor choice for a world map. Tell the mapmaker which part of the Earth you need to show, as well as what people will use the map for.

A06 — Resolve the opening choice

The classroom map and the navigation map can therefore look different for good reasons. Put their purpose beside them: this one lets students compare land area; this one lets a sailor draw a constant-bearing route. Someone looking at either map can then see what it preserves and what they should not use it to judge.

Scope note: Mercator here means the standard projection. Web Mercator is a distinct variant. A constant-bearing route is not generally the shortest route. The example teaches a selection principle; it is not a navigation tutorial.

Send the decisions with the script.

Before recording, separate the spoken copy from visual instructions and factual support. A script full of parenthetical production notes is hard to perform. A clean script with no explanation of its evidence is hard to check. Keep them connected through paragraph or scene IDs.

For this example, A03 needs the audience to understand the constant-bearing advantage and area distortion. A decorative rotating globe would not establish that relationship. A useful visual instruction names the two properties to show, keeps the map labels legible and asks for a factual check on the diagram. If an illustration cannot be produced accurately within the budget, revise the explanation before the edit depends on it.

Give the editor the audience question, the argument, the complete script, the source packet, the intended shape of the cut and the qualifications that must survive shortening. Our companion video editor brief includes actual source audio, a timecoded transcript and an assembled example cut.

The final read-through asks a practical question: could another person explain why each paragraph is here, verify its factual claims and understand what the viewer is meant to see? If that still depends on a call with the writer, the handoff needs another pass.

The audience question, proposed argument, claim-by-claim sources, dates checked, factual limitations, complete script and unresolved questions. Use stable paragraph or scene IDs to connect them.

How do you avoid a video script that sounds like a report?

Organize the explanation around the viewer’s question and the changes in their understanding. Choose the next fact because of what the viewer now needs, then test the spoken draft aloud.
